Major achievements in health policy / Leadership in climate protection working together with industry

"Ursula von der Leyen is the right candidate. She has led the European Union in difficult times with a steady hand and a good compass. I would particularly like to emphasize that she has managed to keep the European Union together despite great difficulties after the Russian invasion of Ukraine," said Peter Liese, environmental policy spokesperson for the largest group in the European Parliament (EPP, Christian Democrats) in view of the forthcoming nomination of Ursula von der Leyen as the EPP group's lead candidate (“Spitzenkandidat”).

"Ursula von der Leyen’s major achievements in the field of public health are fairly unknown. As a doctor, she has been driving forward health policy at EU level even before the pandemic. She has launched a cancer action plan by which we achieved a tangible and very positive outcome for patients. One flagship will be the European Health Data Space, for which the final negotiations are taking place this week. For the next legislative period, we have focused in particular on the topic of cardiovascular diseases. More people die from these diseases than from cancer and the European Union must also make a contribution here. Ursula von der Leyen has shown how climate protection can be put into action working together with the industry and with the citizens. Above all, we support the market economy and targeted support, for example, for innovation and low-income households. Some of the proposals that came from the former Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans went way above what was actually necessary. Timmermans is gone now and Ursula von der Leyen is working even closer with industry and agriculture than before. With the Net-Zero Industry Act and the Critical Raw Materials Act, we have adopted two laws that bring together bureaucracy reduction and climate protection through faster approval procedures and fewer rules in order to become independent of China and enable industry to protect the climate," emphasized Liese.
